I remember a lot of people grumbling about the new NPC charts in the DMG. Can someone explain why? The new charts seem a lot cleaner and more organized to me. Not only does it provide everything you need to know about an NPC in a handy little format, but it provides full stat blocks at 5th and 10th level as well. What exactly was the complaint?
Okay, sure, I guess you have to 'stop and decide what weapon a fighter uses.' Or just pick one, it's really not that big of an issue. How can Monte simultaneously claim that there's too much to choose, but 'each 7th level fighter is going to be an awful lot like another?' Maybe I'm missing something here, but I find the new table a lot easier to use than the old table.
RPG Tinker is a tool for building NPCs for D&D 5e. Here you can choose a template, abilities scores, and hitdices. With that we generate an NPC ready to use in battle! You can even print/pdf it! The tool is under construction and receiving new features each day. It probably has some (or many) errors in it. Help improving it by giving your feedback! Hybrid weapons do about 60% kinetic and 40% thermal damage. The exact proportions depend on the ammunition type used. Each type of projectile weapon ammunition does two (sometimes three) different damage types (one of which is always kinetic). Entropic Disintegrators deal about 60% thermal and 40% explosive damage. Nov 09, 2014 The Big Five could be combined with the DMG pages above to flesh out memorable NPCs! Thank you, Wizards of the Coast. I want to thank the team at Wizards of the Coast for allowing me to preview some of the pages from the new Dungeon Master’s Guide. Ran into an oddity as I was working on some NPC charts. The five NPC classes (adept, aristocrat, commoner, expert, warrior) have starting gold listed. I thought they used the NPC gear value by level chart over on pg 127 at the end of the NPC chapter. How do other DMs handle 1st-level NPC gear?
Monte Cook says this in his review: * The NPC tables in the DMG are now more open ended, and thus less useful. The NPC tables used to be there when you needed a 7th-level fighter or a 13th-level rogue right then and there, in the middle of a game. They came completely statted up and equipped. Now, if you want to use them in that way, you've got to stop in the middle of the game and decide which weapons the fighter uses and spend 8,000 gp on gear for the rogue. Thus, they are useless for the original goal. I guess the designers felt the charts were 'boring,' because you got the same 7th-level fighter every time. Now, they are clearly meant to be used as pre-game development aids to help make NPCs. Unfortunately, each 7th-level fighter is still going to be an awful lot like every other one using this method. What's more, if you're not in the middle of the game, there's no reason not to just make one up from scratch (or use one of the excellent character generators out there, many of which are free online).
I just don't see what he's getting at here. For his 7th level fighter example: From the chart, I see that a 7th level fighter has 57 hp, AC 22, Melee +11/+6, Ranged +9/+4, F/R/W +7/+3/+3, 18 skill points, and 7 feats. He has +1 full plate, a heavy steel shield, a +1 melee weapon, a masterwork ranged weapon, and 2900 gp.Okay, sure, I guess you have to 'stop and decide what weapon a fighter uses.' Or just pick one, it's really not that big of an issue. How can Monte simultaneously claim that there's too much to choose, but 'each 7th level fighter is going to be an awful lot like another?' Maybe I'm missing something here, but I find the new table a lot easier to use than the old table.

Monsters With Treasure
Every monster has a treasure rating (indicating how much treasure it has, although for some creatures the rating is “None”). The tables found below are used to determine the specifics. After referencing the level and kind of treasure (coins, goods, items) found in the creature’s description, roll on the appropriate row and columns of the proper table.
When generating an encounter dealing with monsters away from their lair, remember that a creature only takes what it can easily carry with it. In the case of a creature that cannot use treasure, that generally means nothing. The monster safeguards or hides its treasure as well as it can, but it leaves it behind when outside the lair.
Using the Treasure Table
Cross-reference the level of the treasure on the left with the type of treasure. The level of the treasure is equal to the CR of the monsters in the encounter. A standard treasure (one that includes coins, goods, and items) requires three rolls, one for each category.
Encounter Level | Treasure per Encounter | Encounter Level | Treasure per Encounter |
---|---|---|---|
1 | 300 gp | 11 | 7,500 gp |
2 | 600 gp | 12 | 9,800 gp |
3 | 900 gp | 13 | 13,000 gp |
4 | 1,200 gp | 14 | 17,000 gp |
5 | 1,600 gp | 15 | 22,000 gp |
6 | 2,000 gp | 16 | 28,000 gp |
7 | 2,600 gp | 17 | 36,000 gp |
8 | 3,400 gp | 18 | 47,000 gp |
9 | 4,500 gp | 19 | 61,000 gp |
10 | 5,800 gp | 20 | 80,000 gp |
On average, the PCs should earn one treasure suitable to their level for each encounter they overcome.
